Qualifications The qualification procedure is held in the traditional FIFA continental zones- Asia, Africa, Oceania, Central and North America, Europe and South America. The qualification process starts approximately 3 years before the actual final tournament takes place. This procedure lasts for more than 2 years. The 2010 World Cup will be hosted by the Asian zone. Automatic berth is reserved for the host nations since 1938 World Cup. This right is also reserved with the defending champions till 2002 but was withdrawn in 2006 FIFA World Cup. Hosts FIFA has a pattern of rotating the hosts among the continents. It began with America and Europe. South Korea and Japan jointly hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which was the first in Asia.
